The future of anti-aging.

With the influence of social media, people wish to change their appearances according to the beauty standards set by celebrities, Instagram bloggers, YouTubers, and so on. A study showed that 65.7% of the participants were influenced by social media's before and after images of plastic surgery, and around 54.1% of participants who opted for plastic surgery wanted to look good in their selfies(1).

For many years, plastic surgery was widely used for improving an undesired area of the body or face. It can cost a fortune. Moreover, plastic surgery complications can be far severe and permanent. To avoid severe complications, science has been able to come up with many alternatives. Some of them are as follows:

● Botox Injection

Botox was introduced around 15 years ago and was recommended to be used rather than opt for plastic surgery(2). Botox is used above the eyebrows, the nose's top, and the crow's feet where the wrinkles are smoothed out. Men need more Botox than women do to make wrinkles disappear. Moreover, Botox seems to last longer in women, for about three to six months on average. Botox blocks the nerve signals and prevents muscles contractions. It gives a relaxing effect to the muscles on our foreheads that causes them to become flat and smooth.

This invasive procedure has been reported to last longer, which means fewer appointments with the plastic surgeon. Botox takes 2 to 3 days before showing its results. To maintain the appearance you invested in, you will need frequent Botox injections.

● Derma Fillers

There are two types of derma fillers: Juvéderm and Restylane. Juvéderm is a gel with a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler used in filling the base of the nose to the lips. It gives them a plump effect, making the wrinkles disappear. The step is to apply anesthesia to the patient, and then Juvéderm is injected into the deep depression of the concerned areas.

The effect of Juvéderm stays for around three to eight months(3). As for Restylane, it is also made from acid, but unlike Juvéderm which is used for wrinkles, Restylane is ushyaluroniced for lifting the area.

It is usually used around the eyes, sides of the mouth, and cheeks. It will lift the cheeks and give them some volume(4).

● Fat Grafting

The fat grafting prime procedure's component is liposuction(5). It is performed by well-trained Plastic Surgeons in an accredited center that gets inspected regularly, to ensure that its practices are best and safe for the patient.

The process involves extracting the fat from the specified area through liposuction cannulas(6). The fat is transferred and centrifuged to separate the excess liquid and dead cells from the fat cells. Some plastic surgeons also wash the fat cells with sterile saline solution to discard the fat cells that would not have survived during the grafting process.

In the final stage, the fat is injected into the area where it is required; this is mostly where the fat has atrophied, and that can be the face, hands, and buttocks. Some people have retained 100% of their lips and nasolabial folds for around five years after this procedure. This procedure lasts longer than the other filler procedures. You may have to take few days off from work and other activities.

● Chemical Peels

Chemical peels' ingredients consist of glycolic acid, pyruvic acid, and trichloroacetic acid. It is used to remove the layer of dead, dirty skin cells to help minimize the appearance of acne marks(7)(8). Chemical Peels should be applied regularly for a significant result. These chemical peels are popular for reducing age spots, acne marks, and wrinkles. Chemical peels are used on the face, neck, or even hands. This product also helps in exfoliating the skin and giving you clearer skin(7,9).

● Laser

Another procedure includes the laser to remove any wrinkles, skin pigmentation, blemishes, and hair. There are two types of cosmetic procedure lasers: ablative and non-ablative. The ablative laser helps in removing the thin layers of your skin, while non-ablative only removes the affected layer and increases the collagen in the pores(10). These are small shots of light heat, waved over the skin to destroy or remove the dead skin. Several sessions are needed before showing results.

After laser treatment, a patient must not expose their skin to the sun. People have opted for laser more than dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, micro needling, and chemical peels.

Conclusion

With the advancement of research and development in technology, the above-mentioned cosmetics procedures were discovered without needing to go under the knives. There have been many non-surgical processes introduced to prevent aging or slowing it down. These procedures are easily accessible in different dermatologist's clinics.
